Our Story

You want to build your own business, but only if it’s something you can be truly passionate about. Something that really matters, something that makes you get out of bed every day with a smile.

But what is it you really care about?

That was exactly the question Adrian and Holly were asking themselves as they sat on a beach in Brisbane, thinking about their return to the UK, and wondering what to do with their future. The answer lay in something they both knew and loved: theatre.

However, becoming jobbing actors didn’t appeal. They had both attended theatre clubs as kids, but were put off by how competitive they could be, and how easily toxic environments could spring up, especially for those who lacked in confidence and self-esteem. What should have been a life-affirming experience that could shape their future had soured the whole idea.

Which is when it hit them: what if they could do it differently? What if they could create something wonderful for children that nurtured their self-image and helped them grow with confidence? What if drama exploration wasn’t about getting the lead role, but instead all about connection, creativity, and self-expression?

That was the spark that started it all and Big Mouth Theatre was born!

Building something better

Starting your own business from scratch is never easy but, thanks to a lot of help from the Prince’s Trust and their Business Enterprise Programme, they were soon able to turn their dream into a reality. The very first Big Mouth Theatre After School Club launched at a local village school in the New Forest in February 2013.

The response was immediate, and exceeded even Adrian and Holly’s most hopeful expectations. More and more parents and local schools wanted in, proving there was a huge demand for non-competitive, fun-filled children’s drama clubs in the area.

As early as 2014, they were able to expand their business by launching their Saturday Theatre Program, where children create, develop and rehearse their very own shows from scratch, with all the parts assigned fairly and opportunities shared. No dramas (well, only the good kind!), and no egos – just young people building confidence, working together, and discovering their creative voices. It worked so well, the couple opened another branch in nearby Eastleigh in 2015.

Like many businesses, Big Mouth Theatre faced its biggest challenge during the Covid pandemic. With all clubs closed, things were uncertain, but giving up was never an option. Adrian, Holly, and their coaches simply loved what they did too much, and they could clearly see the positive impact they were having. Between online training, a 2-year-old at home, and a whole lot of determination, the founders worked with a business coach and bounced back stronger than ever.

Holly and Adrian went on to win Family Business of the Year Award at the 2025 Club Hub Awards. From 350 applications for all categories, Big Mouth Theatre was one of just 15 businesses to net a major award.

The future

After over a decade of laughter, learning, and growth, Big Mouth Theatre is ready to write the next exciting act: inviting passionate, like-minded people to join the story and help spread the joy even further.

Could that be you?
